My wife and myself Stayed in the Devonshire Arms in February 2011 and found it to be one of the nicest experiences that we have had. The atmosphere was so warm and pleasant, all the staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was out of this world, both in quality and quantity.
We regard ourselves as " Foodies " and not " Food Snobs " and have dined in many places both in England, The Mediterranean and the Far East. What we received that night was world class and was of the highest standard. We vowed then to go again.
We did in fact return in March this year (2012).
We went straight to the restaurant and perused the menu and found that it had many more dishes to offer. In my book that is not a good thing, from a small restaurant any way.
The staffs were still very friendly, pleasant and efficient
After the normal starters etc, I ordered a seafood risotto, my wife had a macaroni cheese. That is when we both had the shock of our lives the rice was not risotto rice but long grain, it was hard and not cooked and the sauce it was in was plainly added to and not developed from and furthermore it ‘ swamped ‘ the flavour of the seafood. And the taste was appalling. My wife’s Macaroni cheese was like dried-up play dough and she said it was rough to say the least, and that she could do better herself.
After the first taste I sent it back and was quite prepared to leave at that point, but the Manager gave me a free drink and persuaded us to stay. This I agreed to and ordered some grilled gammon. This also turned out to be no better than you could get from the local café, but twice the price
.
I later found out that the establishment had been taken over by new management. In short DO NOT TOUCH IT WITH A BARGEPOLE.
